no .. the old powertoy version 1.0 I was looking for is no longer on the
original
MS site.

I tested it and it works with SP2 (install only the superfast switch
though).

why version one?
there are latest power for xp from Microsoft that works with
SP 2
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowert
oys.mspx

I downloaded and installed Alt-tab powertoy which gives better
display of contents of windows when I press alt-tab.

However, every program icon is appearing twice in that alt-tab
window. when I am at one of icon, there is no display of the
content, and when I am in the other icon, the content of window
gets displayed.

It is still working, however, it is a waste to skip over the
useless double icons.

How to rectify it?

I had not uninstalled the previous alt-tab switcher and had
installed over and above it. It did give the message that
previous program is there, and had asked me whether to
overwrite. I had given yes.

fast user switch has nothing to do with task switching.

Uninstall. :)

Seriously, I noticed a lot of double icons too -- though not every
one. (I guess it depends on the program.) I finally decided it wasn't
any better than the standard Alt-Tab for the way I work, and it was
one less program to load.

one of the reasons for posting anonymously is so that if I look like an
idiot, nobody knows who I am. Though these days I wonder why other
people don't post anonymously !

you'd think that techie people replying would have a radar to spot
their own kind, and not tell a techie to avoid non MS sites.

Though funnily enough, he did post anonymously!

I'm glad you contributed the solution to the - great googlable -
archives. A lot of people dont 'get that' either.

wow!

Due to the above problem of some of the icons appearing twice in
modified taskbar, I uninstalled it.

And I got good, old win98se style Alt-Tab task switcher back.
And it is working perfectly fine.

Seems there was some other modified version already built-in in
my xp cd which was not functioning properly. When I installed
the one I downloaded from ms site, this one overwrote the one
that installed by my xp cd. So, when I uninstalled this one, I
got the default alt-tab back.

Thanks.
