Sun Java vs Ms VM

C

Criquet

My brother has problem completing all the puzzles that we find on the
internet. His computer locks up halfway tru and he cannot complete the
puzzles.

He has the Sun Java installed on his WinXP Home with all updated installed
i.e. SP2.

I have the Microsoft VM installed and my computer never locks up on the same
puzzles. I have WinXP Pro with SP2 installed. I do not have the Sun Java.

We both have plenty of disk spaces and memories,, he has over 700 megs of
memory.

Now how can he install the Microsoft VM? I do not remember how I installed
mine.

Hi Criquet -
You can test whether Java is working on your machine at the following sites:

http://www.pocoso.de/pocoso052.html

http://www.clan.lib.ri.us/clan/javatest.html (This one may be down)

http://www.fitwise.com/testjava.asp (both 1.0 and 1.1 and what's installed)

http://coglab.wadsworth.com/support/browsercheck.html

http://www.ces.clemson.edu/webct/browser_detect.html

and you can test Javascript here:

http://www.dancespots.net/browsertest.htm

There is good information concerning all aspects of the Java situation here:
http://www.javatester.org/installing.html

Be aware, however, that after Dec 31, 2007, MS will apparently no longer be
distributing Java or providing any support for Java including security
fixes. See here: http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/ so you might want to
start thinking about the future.

You can get the Sun Java J2SE RunTimes or SDK here:

http://java.sun.com/downloads/index.html (all versions - select using the
dropdown)

Sun also offers an automatic download and install of the 1.4 Java plug-in
here: http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html

For the MS Java VM, you may need to install v.3805 or v.3809 prior to
upgrading to v. 3810 if you didn't previously have MS Java v. 3805 or 3809
installed.

If your OS is Win2000 SP2, SP3 but NOT SP4 then you can download and install
MS Java VM v. 3809 from here:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/m..._510A502BA8F9B6F19230BB2BCCE87D5474AC9DCD.exe

or here:

http://www.biologylab.awlonline.com...icrosoft.Q810030_W2K_SP4_5849/Q810030_W2K.exe

For Win2000 SP4, you'll need to re-install v.3805, from here (these are also
reported to work for XP):
http://www.download.support.safetec.net/msjavx86/msjavx86.exe

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/msjavx86.exe

http://www.sijet.com/msjavx86.exe

For all other OS's:

Download and install the MS Java VM v. 3809 from one of the links here:

http://ftp.idilis.ro/windows/sp/jvm98/msjavwu.exe, or here:
http://secinfo.huji.ac.il/patches/Win-xp/msjavwu.exe or v. 3805 from here:

http://www.sijet.com/msjavx86.exe (or you can try the SP4 3805's listed just
above)

Then upgrade to v. 3810:

For all OS's except Win2kSP4 obtain v. 3810 here:

http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=1050022631 ,or here:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/m...l/MSJavWU_8073687b82d41db93f4c2a04af2b34d.exe

For Win2k - SP2, SP3 - you can also obtain v. 3810 from Microsoft here:

http://download.microsoft.com/downl...-9b18-423356321682/Q816093_W2K_SP4_X86_EN.exe

For Win2kSP4, to get 3810 from Microsoft you now have to get Q816093 from
Windows Update Catalog - use the entry for Windows 2000 SP4 (this seems to
be the only Win2k option that has it) and then find 816093 in the list. You
can find directions for using the Windows Update Catalog functions here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;323166. (I am
informed by Torgeir Bakken, MVP, that if you rename the downloaded file from
here: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=1050022631 to
msjavwu.exe it will then also work for SP4. The following four additional
ftp sources MAY also work, either directly or using Saybo's procedure,
below: ftp.procergs.com.br/pub/procergs/ASP/JavaXP/Microsoft

ftp.eesnet.ru/windows/internet/MSIE/msjavwu.exe

ftp.boulder.ibm.com/software/xde/2003.06.12.01/install/DISK1/SETUP/SETUP/pat
ches/msjavwu.exe

ftp.hs-niederrhein.de/pub/security/systems/winxp/fixes/security-bulletins/us
a/msjavwu.exe )

The following procedure has also been reported to work for Win2kSP4 by Saybo
at
"I always try to install the 3805 package 1st. Most of the time that

does not work, so I then have them download the 3810 package, open it

in WinZip and extract msjava.dll and vmhelper.dll to the system32

folder. Then run the 3810 install. This has had a 100% success rate

for the last couple of months."

Both Java VM's can co-exist on your machine quite nicely. Just select which
one you want to use in Tools|Internet Options|Advanced and restart all IE
browsers. Here, courtesy of Mitch Gallant, MVP Security, is a tiny utility
which allows you to toggle and view status of your current Java VM vendor
associated with IE:

http://www.jensign.com/JavaScience/SelectIEJVM/index.html

A note from Mitch Gallant:

"One note about the JVM Selector utility: If/when you install a new version
of Sun J2SE, you need to manually select to have Sun JVM as default JVM for
IE (in install), or after install via the JavaPlugin control panel. This
generates the necessary win32 registry entries, which must be present for
the utility to know about JavaPlugin. After that, the utility should work
properly."

You dumb cünt! 3810 can ONLY be installed if one has a previous version. It is a security update to prior installs of MSJVM (3805, 3809).

As the result of a lawsuit by Sun Microsystems, and the ensuing
settlement, Microsoft was not allowed to provide its own Java Virtual
Machine to Windows XP users. You can get almost the same
functionality by downloading Sun's version of Java from
http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html. If you want the wider website
compatibility of Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine, it is still
available from a lot of 3rd-party web sites, one of which is here:
http://www.virtualmachine.tk/.

If you do choose the Microsoft JVM, be sure to apply a needed
security patch.

Is this patch still required for SP2 installations? It seems from the MS
Bulletins you referenced that this issue has been dealt wuith by a MS SP1
patch. What does this third party patch do that the MS patch doesn't.

I would appreciate some clarification.

It's not really a "3rd party patch." It's Microsoft's original
patch, but provided from a 3rd party web site because Microsoft is no
longer allowed to provide its version.

It's still required.

There was a security update to MS Java SUBSEQUENT to SP1, and I don't
beleive that this patch is present in SP2.

Thanks Barry.

Seems a odd that MS has not patched their OS after such a time more
especially as SP2 is touted as being aimed principally wrt to security.

Correct - SP2 does noting about Java. The final MS VM is available as
a 'critical update' patch (build 3810) *if* you have any version in
place; it is KB reference 816093

It is a consequence of the court ruling. The patch is available if and
only if you already have an earlier version in place, but SP2 is not
allowed to have it, and SP1 had to be replaced by SP1a which differs
only in leaving it out

If you download MS java then reboot your computer and go to windows update
would any needed patch or update be listed there?

Should be, however, MS does no longer support the JVM. Better
uninstall this software and get Java from www.sun.com.

Your post is kinda old but what I am looking for. Has anything that you know
of changed on this situation?

I want to know what is the best way to REINSTALL MS JAVA onto my WIN XP
system! Please help. My SUN JAVA is of the latest version and supposedly
installed properly - according to the SUN site. BUT it continually hangs,
locks up, and is super slow in java sites. Eventually (never fails) it will
lock you up where your only option to shut that window down is to go to the
TASK MGR and END the program. With this action it will take all java sites
down. Also, in TASK MGR it never says these applications are NOT RESPONDING,
as you would expect, but when you end them the error you get is "hanging
application".

I would spend a little more time trying to get Sun Java working, instead
of falling back on the older MS-Java. Have you gone to the Java applet
and dumped the cache ? Also, does your install still (or have) parts of
the MS-Java present ?
Sun Java 5.0 should work fine, but you may have a Java Infection that
your current Anti-Virus isn't catching. It might be worth some time running
one of the on-line virus scanners. ( I recommend Panda or Trend Micro).
From what you describe it could be a corrupted install or some other
type of conflict. You might want to check the Downloaded Program
Files folder (Under Windows) and see if the Java Plug-In status is perhaps
unknown or corrupted.
You would also want to make sure you only have a single version of
Sun Java installed. There are lots of things that could be wrong and it
might take a bit more investigation to get it squared away.

Hi Ssea - You can test whether Java is working on your machine at the

You can get the Sun Java J2SE RunTimes or SDK here:
http://java.sun.com/downloads/index.html (all versions - select using the
dropdown - I recommend that you don't install any version prior to 1.4.2.06
in order to get a necessary bug fix.)

Sun also offers an automatic download and install of the 1.4 Java plug-in

If you want the latest and greatest, you can link to a download for the J2SE
5.0 JRE here: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp (What I use,
BTW)

For the MS Java VM, you may need to install v.3805 or v.3809 prior to
upgrading to v. 3810 if you didn't previously have MS Java v. 3805 or 3809
installed.

or here:
http://www.biologylab.awlonline.com...icrosoft.Q810030_W2K_SP4_5849/Q810030_W2K.exe

For Win2000 SP4, follow the directions here: Frequently Asked Questions
About the Microsoft VM and Windows 2000 Service Pack 4
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=820101 "Because the Microsoft VM files are
not protected by the Windows File Protection (WFP) feature in Windows 2000

http://secinfo.huji.ac.il/patches/Win-xp/msjavwu.exe or v. 3805 from
here:
http://www.sijet.com/msjavx86.exe

Then upgrade to v. 3810:

For all OS's except Win2kSP4 obtain v. 3810 here:
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=1050022631 ,or here:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/m...l/MSJavWU_8073687b82d41db93f4c2a04af2b34d.exe

For Win2k - SP2, SP3 - you can also obtain v. 3810 from Microsoft here:
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...-9b18-423356321682/Q816093_W2K_SP4_X86_EN.exe

For Win2kSP4, to get 3810 from Microsoft you now have to get Q816093 from
Windows Update Catalog - use the procedure given in the Q820101 link given
above for Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition (Yes, Win98x/SE - it's
not a mistake). You can find directions for using the Windows Update
Catalog functions here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;323166.

Thank you for your reply, and Jim's.

I have spent A LOT OF HOURS and DAYS trying to find out exactly what the
problem is and how to remedy it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as
so far no luck in solving the mystery of why this machine won't perform as
expected.
BUT it seems to be those of us with the newest machines and probably an
upgraded WIN XP ver
than the others - thanks to this java issue - who are experiencing all
these things.

I went in and dumped the cache in SUN JAVA, and I have tired dumping in
explorer
numerous times, even though I don't think that is the problem.

I have reinstalled on this machine several times, even though the java site
(and I tested
with several of the suggested ones) and all others say it is installed and
working for applets, etc.
I had another machine I bought in OCT with the same issues. I downloaded
and reinstalled
several different ways ( manually versus auto, with aV on and off, etc ) but
still worked as this
one does. THEY BOTH DID THE SAME THING FROM DAY ONE -- and it continued -
all the
while using SUN JAVA.

The only thing I have not tried is redoing this brand new machine from
scratch with a complete
reinstall of WIN XP, but I have tried redoing it through RESTORE and the
IMAGE from the
hidden partition - which, by the way, is my next project, seeing that
partition from windows! :)

So what I would like from you, if possible, is more DETAILED - step by step
type instructions,
on what I could do that I have not already tried. And that done - then more
detailed instructions on
how to REDO the old java. I was thinking of taking the JAVA folder and all
its contents from my
old machine and just putting it in PROGRAM FILES in its entirety on my new
machine and seeing
if that doesn't magically redo my old java. Figured it couldn't hurt.

I have already downloaded several files that I think were in the
instructions on how to redo your old java.
I am not sure if I even had the old java on this machine on not. Been
playing with too many machines
lately - and not sure how to verify that. (suggestions?)

As for the download and it being the real mccoy, I did the download and
install and so it is not on
my machine, I don't think. But when I did download it previously, I had
checked that.

As for viruses on my system, et cetera. I am sure there are not. I am
running the full norton with security
and firewall, spybot microsoft anti-spyware, and I am super careful. I
love Panda and Trend and have used
them many times as a second check with my old machines and recommend to
friends.

I think I have covered about everything possible to do without resorting to
FRESH new redoing of my
machine - which I really don't think will help OR trying to redo my
machine to use the OLD JAVA.

But I am either going to solve this problem soon or this sucking machine is
going back - cause I still go back
to only US WITH THE NEW MACHINES, new Java in our window versions, etc
having these problems.

And since clearing the cache and doing everything else under the sun in SUN
JAVA CONSOLE, this site
won't wrap as I type! What a pain! lol

Sorry it is so long but wanted to cover everything. Thanks for listening
and again - any suggestions welcome!

So, as you can tell I am at my wits end. I am not computer illiterate so I
know what I am seeing
is not me but the machine/programs/ sites et cetara. But I am not so
educated that I could ever say
I know how to do it all. There are lots of things I still need to know
about many things related it the
IT environment, but I have enough background to be able to pick it up with
some help.
