Sudden problem with 3D preview of screensavers and now games do not run on pc? help

Hello group, I sure hope someone here can help me, for some unknown reason
in the last couple of days, my pc will not allow my son to play any one his
games, ie, Thrillville of the Rails, Tornado Alley, MS Flight Simulator,
also none of the 3D microsoft screen savers are working. I have not
downloaded anything, nor do I have a virus.
I did a restore to an earlier time which is a real pain, because I have to
un-install Norton to be able to do this, but everything was ok again, but
then again this am we are right back where we started. Does anyone know of
this issue and how to correct it?
Thanks so much for you help.

Try installing the DirectX November Redistributable and see if it
helps:

Well I had already tried this and it tells me a newer or same version is
already installed, so where do I go from here? This is so strange, I have
never had this kind of issue before.

ATI Radeon X1050 256ram video card as far as I know it's current, I just
installed this last fall when I had issues with some video editing.

ATI Radeon X1050 256ram video card as far as I know it's current, I just
installed this last fall when I had issues with some video editing.

The most recent driver (version 8.2) was released on Feb 13th. In
device manager, it should have a date of 1/22/2008, and a shown
version of 8.453.0.0 if it is current. Please verify this is what you
driver version states. If not, here's a direct link to the current
driver:

Well I found the problem while checking another problem, for some reason my
pc won't install a recent update from MS. In looking at my recent updates,
it shows a driver update, well I rolled back to the previous driver and
everything works now, but how can I change it so MS does not install this
again, as it will not work on my video card for some reason. Also what do I
do about my pc not wanting to install this latest update from MS.

thanks, you have been my savior today.

Could you elaborate a bit more as this might be useful info to pass
along. When in Windows Update, you can select the checkbox option to
Not Show This Update Again so after that it should both you anymore.

When visiting Microsoft Update, ignore all hardware/driver updates and get
them instead from the manufacturer or hardware vendor. These are usually
optional anyway. I don't believe that graphics card driver updates install
through Automatic Updates.
