The last time I recall when we batted this around, there was a nice free
package that would handle a single account. The same package was
available for multiple accounts -- and the price was most reasonable
(unfortunately, I've forgotten the name).
I recall that the publisher was very accomodating, and participated in
the discussion right here. That's my kind of software company.
I am using an older version of Quicken, which I purchased: I have taken
a strong dislike to the company -- bordering on disgust. The program
interrupts my work attempting to sell me things, and there is no way
that I am able to contact the company; they have insulated themselves
behind an electronic moat!
My program demands connection to a telephone number during installation,
a number that Quicken has disconnected! Likewise, all other contacts
don't work. Luckily, after a few rounds of this, the routine goes ahead
and works anyway.
I'm truly fed up.
However, the program works OK. I'll keep using it until I try something
I like better.
I recently took a small business class, and the teacher suggested that
people use Quicken because it is a standard -- your bookkeeper and
accountant can easily plug into it. So, compatibility can be more
important than we think.

I run two businesses using MYBIS bookkeeper. It is a fully functional
GST inclusive program that has been a pay system until now. The
author is a friend of mine and has pretty much decided to go the
freeware path as he is too busy with another life to be on call for
paying clients. It is a wonderful package and very easy to use with
full tutorial/help menus.
The web site is rather out of date but still there so I suggest you
go to the site and either download a trial version or email the
author to ask for what you want. You need an unlock key from him. I
am sure it will be no problem as freeware, as he cannot provide
support at the moment and has told me that he will make it freeware.

I am using an older version of Quicken, which I purchased: I have taken
a strong dislike to the company -- bordering on disgust.
Ditto re: company (Intuit) disgust. I dropped TurboTax after 14-years
when they tried to foist that hideous product activation scheme on
users a couple of years ago. Intuit is a company that views it
customers as victim/hostages.
I do however still use Quicken v6 for DOS on winXPpro. Works fine and
fits on a floppy.
