Sub Documents

Hi

I am using Word XP.

I insert a number of files into a document to make one
large doc. As I need to be able to work on these files
independantly I then use the master and sub documents
feature (I know this may sound a rather long winded way of
doing things but heading numbering is an issue, as is a
main TOC).

The problem I have is that when I open the sub documents,
the headers and footers do not show. I can only see them
when working within master doc view.

I need to be able to print these sub docs individually as
well as part of the main. Any ideas??

I have tried:-
1. Creating the same H&F layout in all docs before
inserting them.

2. Setting the headers and footers to be same as previous
throught the large doc before turning the paragraphs into
sub docs.

I am happy with VBA if this is the only solution.

Thanks very much for your time.

Kerry.

No promises but you might try making a master template and then attaching it
to each subdoc. This took care of normal formatting issues in my docs - not
sure about H&F.

"Master Document" is a term of art in Word referring to a "feature" that not
only doesn't work but also destroys documents. The consensus (with the
limited exception of Steve Hudson) among those offering advice on these
newsgroups is that using the Master Document feature is a sure way to
destroy your document. It can destroy parts of your document that you are
not even working on! I think John McGhie said it succinctly when he said
that there are two kinds of Master Documents: Those that are corrupt and
those that will be corrupt soon. See <URL:

Master Document feature and workarounds. (This page also has a link to Steve
Hudson's chapter on how he gets Master Documents to work.) See <URL:

information on what goes wrong, and <URL:

how to salvage what you can.
