- What is the recent history of this machine?
- What happens when you try to log in?
- What happens when you press F8 at boot time and select Normal Mode?

I have currently two computers with the same problem: on desktop en and
laptop. With both I wanted to make some changes in 'safe mode', so I used
start>run>msconfig>(tab)BOOT.INI>/SAFEBOOT checked.
It restarted in safe mode, but then I noticed I could not loging.
-with the desktop I have to type in both my login and password; but i get
the following notice:" The system could not log you on. Make sure you
Username and domain...."
-With the laptop i can only chose to login as admin or Administrator. I
cannot chose my own login and I don't know the password for those two other
options...

If I use the F8 at boot time I get the screen with all the options where I
select normal mode (I have also tried the "last kwon good configuration" but
no difference), but it just starts up in safe mode as before (both for the
desktop as for the laptop).

any help is appreciated...

Did you uncheck "Safemode" boot in boot.ini?

Run System Restore from a command prompt as follows:
C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe -
check out: "support.microsoft.com/kb/304449"
