Strange Send/Receive problem

I have four email accounts, when I start Windows Mail it connects to all
four accounts and downloads any new mail.

However, if I click the send receive button it doesn't work, it says there
are errors but the error tab is empty.

If I use the 'Receive all' option from the drop down it works fine, it also
works if I check each account manually.

Clicking 'Send All' from the drop down doesn't give any error either.
There's only a problem when using the Send/Receive button.

Can anyone help?

What if any antivirus programs do you have? Some of them tend
to cause problems in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately.

Yes, that is strange.
Do any of the accounts have anything in common? Are they with the same ISP?

I'm running AVG.

I haven't always had this problem, it only started recently. My
understanding that is that AVG is one of the ones that work with Vista.
