strange hardware install problem: always "pci device"

Brannon

I have a piece of hardware that installs and works fine in several
win2k boxes. However, in one box, it is always detected and installed
as "PCI Device". It never even asks me where to get the files from.
"PCI Device" does not show up in the device manager even with hidden
items enabled, but it always shows up in Add/Remove hardware lists. I
can remove it, but scanning for new hardware then just installs "PCI
Device" again. I suppose my registry may be corrupted; I use the box
for a lot of hardware device testing. Anyone else seen this or know how
to fix it? Can I remove some registry entry or inf file manually and
make it work? Thanks for your time.

Check with the manufacturer of this device for a digitally signed Windows
2000 specific device driver for the device. Run the Update Driver wizard
using the Update Driver button, but do not let Windows 2000 automatically
detect devices. Instead, click Have Disk when prompted, and manually point
the wizard to the appropriate driver.
