Strange Email Problem -- Can You Help?

I'm not sure where to ask this question. If there's a more
appropriate place please tell me.

I have a friend who is having an odd problem with file attachments to
outgoing emails.

When he tries to send jpeg files larger than about 50-80K they fail
with this error message.

===================================
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection.

Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems,
or a long period of inactivity. Subject 'large test file'
Account: 'pop.ix.earthlink.net', Server: 'mail.mindspring.com',
Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '421 blount.mail.mindspring.net
SMTP incoming data timeout - closing connection.', Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 421, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F
===================================

He can receive any and all files. This includes the exact same files
he can't send. That is, he can receive a large jpeg, but if he turns
right around and tries to send it back it fails. He can send all
other kinds of files we've tested. Excel, Word, *.rtf, etc. larger
than the jpegs he can't send.
