Strange characters in Ping. Please Help

Dale M

I cannot dial up to the internet, I can connect but I
can't ping any public addresses.

When I use ping 127.0.0.1, it pings ok but at the end the
ping message says
'Ping statistics for ' followed by some ASCII characters.

I am hoping this is a clue to my problem.

If there is not an answer, is there a way to just re-
install the entire Networking portion if Windows?

Thanks

Are you having problems browsing webpages also? If not it
sounds like a firewall problem. If you are using Zone
Alarm, i would uninstall it and see if things work
without your firewall. If they do, go ahead and reinstall
your firewall while your accessing the net, and tell it
to auto-configre your programs for internet access.

Hope I helped,

And what type of connection do you have to the Internet? Dial-up?
ISDN? Broadband (cable/DSL)? Satellite? From your computer to your
ISP (Internet Service Provider), just exactly what is in the path
between the two of you to get Internet access?

Sounds more like you cannot connect to your ISP's DNS server to get the
IP addresses (which computers actually use) for IP names (which are only
for ease of use by humans). Do you have a firewall running (software or
hardware)? Tried disabling or bypassing it yet? Had a user that found
PC-Cillin's firewall was causing problems (see Google Groups message at
http://snipurl.com/62kp).
