Stopping services?????????

When I go through msconfig to see if there are any unnecessary startup items
to stop from running I also notice the services tab. In this file are
dozens of different files most of which I have no idea as to what they do.
Just what are services & how do I find what each one does? I'm only
guessing but it seems likely that many of these could be stopped. Is this
likely?

You might find looking at the NT services using the Services MMC easier (services.msc). You'll see a description of each and can look at their properties. Typical services that can be stopped and configured for Manual startup or Disabled are:

Indexing Service
FTP Publishing
IIS Admin (web server)
World Wide Web Publishing (web server)
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)
Automatic Updates (if you don't want the Windows Update)
Creative Service for CDROM (if you have their sound card software)
Error Reporting Service (if you don't want to report crashes to Microsoft)
Messenger (eliminate those popup spams, but you really need a firewall)
Task Scheduler (if you don't use Scheduled Tasks)

There might be other software-specific services depending on what you have installed.
