STOP 0x8e on switch user -- NPFS.SYS

C

Chris

I have an XP machine that used to have no problems with the fast user
switching. Now, however, it crashes. When I do the following:
1. Select log out/switch user
2. Get to login screen
3. Enter username and password

The screen goes blank for a second like it's going to log me in, then I
get a BSOD with the STOP 0x8e. It says the error was caused by
NPFS.SYS, which I looked up and found out is the named pipe filesystem
driver.

Are there any fixes for this? This doesn't happen if you actually log
and then log in as another user.

Thanks,

Chris

Well that is a decent site, but I already knew what the stop error is.
(I'm a software engineer) I'm really trying to figure out if this a
known error or not. The consistency of this error says to me it's
software-caused. Also, I see that someone else just posted about the
same problem. This has to be something caused by a recent Microsoft
patch, and it's not SP2 (although that patch may be in SP2...) because
this machine hasn't had SP2 installed.
