I had a problem booting windows xp/pro. I spent three
hours with microsoft support in india trying to get it
resolved. Microsoft supplies unlimited install support
for windows xp and two support sessions for other
problems. Unstable memory caused my window xp OS problem.
In any case we first copied these five file using dos
system, default and three others which I can not remenber
to coresponding bak files. Then we copied the same five
file from a backup directory( I think called reserve) to
the system directory which I copied to those bak files.
It didn't work I still couldn't boot windows. The next
thing we did was a windows repair install booting from
the windows CD ROM. This worked. I don't recall all the
steps, but microsoft should give you support with this.
However be forwarned a windows repair install is not the
cure all to all your problems, it can delete files on
your system. In my case I don't know if it directly
related to the repair install, but after it my system
does not recognize my Grapics card (3D video adapter) so
be prepared.

I resolved this issue by performing a repair of the Windows XP
install. This is the only thing that worked for me.
