Startup problems

I

Its only me

Everything was working fine last night on my home computer running Windows XP Pro sp1. This morning when I switch on, after the startup routine I get the welcome screen with my name. I had this feature switched off previously with tweakui. When I click on my user name, it says "loading your personal settings" the screen flickers and then it says "saving your settings" and returns to the logon screen.

No matter what I do, I cannot get the computer to the desktop. Have tried starting in safe mode but experience the symptoms above. Can anyone help me with this problem? I don't really want to have to do a clean or repair install unless absolutely necessary. I have a dialup connection and it will take days to get the updates downloaded again.

Thankyou for your help.

Hi,

Try the option "last known good configuration"

Also, boot to the recovery console, and run the command chkdsk /r

If this does not solve the problem, do a repair installation..

Even the option "last known good configuration" gives me the welcome screen and the same symptoms as before. It looks to me like a repair install is going to be the most simple option.

Try the recovery console CHKDSK /R option.. otherwise, proceed with a repair install.

I don't know what is wrong but I cannot get the system to boot from the cd drive. It is set up correctly in the bios but it says failed to find boot record. I have taken out the hard disk and put it into another computer. The disk check has been done but still I cannot boot past the welcome screen. Safe mode and the other options on the recovery screen all bring me to the log on screen and nothing happens after that. I'm at a total loss as to what to do next.
Try the recovery console CHKDSK /R option.. otherwise, proceed with a repair install.

Hi OP (sorry your name is ?),
I wonder that the RAM is faulty.
If you have two ram sticks (cards) in tandem, try removing one when the pc
is off,and then re boot. If no different, swap the ram sticks, and have
another go.
Worth a try, as it costs zilch.
Rob.

Thanks for that Rob, but the ram is ok. Still cannot find a way to get away
from the logon screen. I can't understand why it says there is no boot
record on my XP cd. Have tried it in both my cd drives.

Hi "Its only me",
I am out of my depth here but I have read here that there are differences in
the provision (the lack of) a boot program. It depends on what actual "type"
of windows that was loaded on your pc.
O.E.M.versions or retail versions, something like that, to do with the
licensing.
Perhaps one of the MVP's can point the right way for you
Rob.

I

Its only me

It is a retail version of XP. Tried again last night and the only cd that
will boot is win 98!!!!!! Of course it starts a dos screen but because the
hard drives are formatted as ntsc they are not recognised. Still stuck. Will
try to get the set of boot floppies today and see if it makes any
difference.

I

Its only me

Just as a final note to this problem. I used the floppy disks to boot and
did a repair install. Everything is now working "tickety boo". I still don't
know what caused the initial problem and why the computer wouldn't boot from
the XP cd. A strange scenario.
