Startup Fails - Boot Sector, Sys files Erased

J

Jimbo

I posted the question below, and followed the instructions
from "Doug Knox MS-MVP and "Rick \"Nutcase\" Rogers, but it
still doesn't work. I did the fixboot and bootcfg /rebuild,
and I copied ntldr and ntdetect.com to the the root
directory. When I reboot, I get the Windows XP Professional
Splash screen for about 3 seconds, then for 1/2 second I
see a blue screen with lines of code, then the computer
restarts, and the process continues in a loop.

Please Help.

I set up a dual-boot system as described in Q306559. On the
C hard drive I was using Windows 98 SE on a FAT volume. On
a second hard drive partioned into drives D & H I was
using Windows XP Professional, with both drives formatted
as FAT volumes. This worked great for about a year until I
reformatted the C hard drive as FAT. When I rebooted, I got
a blank screen with two spades showing.

I tried to reinstall windows 98 SE on the C drive, but when
I inserted the original OEM boot disk, I got this message
"Disk I/O Error. Replace the disk, and then press any key".
I get the same error even if I try and install XP on it.

How do I now make the D & H volume a bootable windows xp
professional volume while preserving all of my data?

How can I install any OS on drive C?

In addition to the BOOTCFG /REBUILD command, you'll also
want to run the
FIXBOOT command. You'll also need to replace NTLDR and
NTDETECT.COM in the
root directory of the C: drive. See my web site,
www.dougknox.com and go to
Win XP Tips

For Win9x/Me: Install 98/Me after XP is Installed.
For Windows 2000: Install Windows 2000 after XP is installed.

You'll primarily be interested in the section on Repairing
the XP Boot
Loader, at this point. You'll also need to copy the two
files I mentioned,
above, from the XP CD.

Hi Jimbo,

Install your OS of choice to "C" normally. Then boot the
WinXP CD and load
the Recovery Console. From the command prompt, run bootcfg
/rebuild. I
suggest you install the new OS first, as the install will
overwrite any boot
files placed there and you will have to rerun the bootcfg
command again.

If you are making it to the Windows XP splash screen then
you are not having a "boot files" issue.
The blue screen that is flashing by is an error screen
with information about the error.
Did you try booting to safe mode?
If you can boot to safe mode you are in a good boat.

Hi Jimbo,

Possibly a damaged boot.ini file, can you edit it by loading the Recovery
Console? It may have a bad value on some line.

You might also run a repair operation of WinXP at this point. Follow these
steps to do a repair install which should preserve your data, settings, and
programs:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive.
2. Restart your computer. If you have to, change the BIOS settings to start
from
the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer again.
3. At the "Welcome to Setup" page, press ENTER.
4. Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.
5. Use the arrow keys to select the installation of Windows XP that you want
to
repair, and then press R to start the automatic repair process.
6. When Setup is completed, activate Windows XP.

Note that you will need your Product Key for this procedure, so have it
handy before you begin.
