startup applications disappear

I am working on a toshiba satellite running on xp home sp 2. Startup
items have completely disappeared. By startup Items I am speaking of
the items that populate the statup tab in msconfig. For example I
installed the application for the touchpad. They are there after the
first reboot, but after that they completely disappear. Any ideas?

Well, if you are referring to the programs on your Start menu directly,
the ones that are not "Pinned" (Pinned applications will not be
automatically removed from the menu unless you right click and select
unpin from the context menu) to the top, those can be removed manually,
it will not remove the program as it is only a shortcut to the program.
Another thing you have to remember is that program icons you see on
your start menu will change as by order and number of uses. So if you
saw a Toshiba touchpad program on it, then afterwards never used it
again it will disappear from the list until you say, deleted other
programs from the start menu thus bringing it back to Most recently
used prgram status.

The reason why Winodws always updates or changes the programs on the
white part of the start menu under your account name is because it
makes it faster for you to get to the program you use most, and saves
you from opening up and searching for the program from the All Programs
menu. If you do not like Windows doing this to you, might I suggesst
you use the Classic Start Menu, it is changeable by RIGHT CLICKING on
the Start button and selecting PROPERTIES, then clicking the button
that says Classic Start Menu.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Adam,

I appreciate the help, but I was referring to the actual applications
that run when windows initially runs. I was referring to the startup
tab in msconfig, not the start menu.

I have found the same fault myself.

Computer recently formatted and a number of applications were
reinstalled. Approximately 4-5 reboots after these applications were
installed, all of a sudden the registry keys
HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN have both had all of
their entries removed.

I restored from a backup taken approximately 20 minutes before the fault
occurred, and monitored the keys using SysInternals' Regmon utility,
although I could not find a process that was attempting to modify these
keys.

I have managed to fix the symptoms by disabling delete permissions for
all users, but I'm still not sure of the cause.

Any further advice would certainly be appreciated.
