Starting up issue....

Hi all,
i am a bit stumped on this new issue.... my computer boots up ok (seemingly)
up the windows xp splash window, then after a few moments, the screen just
goes black but the cursor arrow is there (and i can move it around).
i tried safe mode and it almost the same except in safe mode, i have the
words safe mode in the corners.

its a fairly new computer p4 2.8, 512mb ram, 40gb hard drive. integrated
video and audio and LAN.

any suggestions are welcome!!!

It sounds like you're in Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

This option is the same as Safe mode, except that Cmd.exe starts instead of
Windows Explorer.

What happens if you type: explorer and hit the Enter key?

Or...
Open Task Manager...
Ctrl + Shift + Esc | Click File | Click New Task (Run...) | Type: explorer
| Click OK |

If your Desktop appears after the Desktop Warning: Windows is running in
safe mode message, open Task Manager...
Ctrl + Shift + Esc | Click File | Click New Task (Run...) | Type: msconfig
| Click OK |

UNSelect: /SAFEBOOT under the boot.ini tab | Click Apply |
Under the General tab Select: Normal Startup - load all device drivers and
services | Click Apply and Close

Hope this helps. Let us know.

lorne,

Without physically seeing your machine, I hesitate to even guess what's
wrong. My first guess was incorrect.

Start in Safe Mode and run your antivirus software, if it will run.
Try sfc /scannow
If you have no data that you cannot afford to lose, then try re-installing.
If you have data that you cannot afford to lose, back it up first. I can
tell you from experience, that you will forget something and you will lose
it.

I have this exact same problem and I have started the computer in saf
mode, safemode with CMD.exe, last known config, but it just boots u
with the cursor on the screen. In Safe Mode it shows safe mode in th
corners but no OS functions available

This problem occurs on my Dell Inspiron laptop, and I have also trie
to connect to external monitor. This brings the same result with th
corsor on black screen. The function keys is also responding so th
keyboard seems ok. This due to I had to press Fn key and F8 (CRT
LCD

Any suggestions??????? :smirk

See if the Task Manager will open and if explorer.exe will start.

Open the Task Manager...
Ctrl + Shift + Esc | Click File | Click new Task (Run...) |
Type: explorer | Click OK

If your desktop, taskbar and start button appear, run your antivirus and
anti-spyware programs.

I've got the same problem.
I've found someone else with the same problem in google. (also Microsoft
forum)
with: windows xp only cursor -> Major Problem

I hope anyone can post a working solution, rather than completly reinstall
the os.
