Start Up

How can I find out which programmes are loaded when I start up my PC. And is
there a list of programmes that are needed for Windows XP to run. When I find
the list can I delete the programmes that are not needed at startup?

This program is easy to use and has advice on what programs are essential,
non-essential, and not advised. It does miss things though:

You may also want to look at AutoRuns from SysInternals. As far as I know
this captures absolutely everything, however it is not so easy to use:

Hi Trevor,

Windows XP itself does not require any startup programs. The startup programs are usually added by third-party software you install (eg., Dialer program from your ISP, Antivirus, firewall applications etc).

To disable a program from running at Windows startup, first see if there is an option similar to "load at startup" in the corresponding application(s). If so, uncheck the option. If applications do not provide such option, you may use the MSCONFIG.EXE utility to troubleshoot Windows startup.

Adding to the other helper Good Advice here is my input:
AutoRuns for Windows v8.61
By Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx
You can Remove StartUp Programs by the AutoRun and also the Registry Entries.

Here you will find the Programs running at StartUp:

C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Start Menu\Programs\Startup =Look in the
Right Pane/Window for the Programs and you can delete them
C:\Documents and Settings\All users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup = Look in
the Right Pane/Window for the Programs and you can delete them.

Open a run command and type in:
Regedit.exe click [OK] on the Registry Editor locates these Keys:

[-]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run=
Look in the Right Pane/Windows for running Processes.
[-]HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run =Look in
the Right Pane/Windows for running Processes.
