start up error

When I cleick on brower icon on desktop to open I get an
error message:
"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to
close. Sorry for the inconvienence."

The error details (signature) indicate:

AppName: iexplore.exe
AppVer: 6.00.2800.1106
ModName: winshow.dll
ModVer: 1.0.0.1
Offset: 00001df1

What's up with this? How do I fix it? I call tech
support and have been on hold for hours!
