Easy....
W2K may be slightly different.
Here is how you do it on XP
right click task bar and select properties. Select the customize radio
button next to the start menu you use.
Then select clear list button.

Use *TweakUI*, search for this on google.com.

TweakUI is *not* a third party tool. It comes
straight from MicroSoft.

You simply need to clear the items in the RunMRU
registry keys - which is really all the TweakUI
does for you - and go through a logoff/logon cycle.

TweakUI can also be set to automatically clear the
Run history - and optionally several other histories -
at each logon.

As Rob, pointed out it is not a third party tool. And to add to that,
I must say that some of the things in Windows, require modifications
in the registry. Manually modifying the registry is dangerous and should
be avoided. TweakUI is a little program, which does those registry
modifications for you safely. It is a very useful program, a must have
for every Windows OS.

In Win2K, right-click on an open section of the task bar, select
Properties, Advance tab, and click the Clear button.

Except that clears away a lot more than what
the OP said he wants to do.

He doesn't necessarily want to also throw away
his recently used documents history or his
IE history.

That procedure doesn't clear IE history, but it probably does clear Recent
Documents. I forgot about that because I have Recent Documents
permanently disabled. It also clears the Run history. If you want to be
very specific in you delete, it's going to take a third-party program or
editing the Registry.

No third party program is required - TweakUI
does the job quite nicely and can be set to
do it at every logon.
