start-run command screen disappears

I've used XP for several years, but have never had this type of problem on my
pc.

I go to Start, then Run, and enter either msconfig or ipconfig, only to have
the black pop up screen disappear almost instantly, without allowing me to
view any data.

If I use the long route, and go to Start, Programs, Accessories, Command
Prompt, then and only then will the black screen stay open and allow me to
view the data.

What is wrong with my system all of a sudden, and what can I do to fix it?

If you want to run ipconfig.exe via Start / Run then you could
use this command:

cmd /k ipconfig

If you run ipconfig by itself then the command window will close
immediately. This has always been like this. You might, of course,
have created your own batch file called "ipconfig.bat" but then
you would be the best person to know about such customisations.

To the best of my recollection, when I have had IP problems in the past, the
IP help people simply had me type ipconfig (without any addenda) into the RUN
box and it would open the black screen, and that would stay open until we got
the info we needed. I honestly do not recall having to add any extra
commands to the ipconfig line to keep it open.

My RUN window opens in c:\Documents and Settings/User>, and will not run
msconfig from there, which is another reason that I am suspect of your
solution, since I used to be able to run both commands from the Start-Run box.

The cmd /k ipconfig command line that you wrote for me will only
temporarily assuage the ipconfig issue, without a permanent fix to the
problem.

If I recall correctly then Windows 98 had an ipconfig look-alike
command with a graphical user interface, perhaps winipconf.exe.
It would stay on the screen until the user clicked OK. This
command does not exist in WinXP. Your IP people probably
created a batch file called IPConfig.bat, which prevented the
screen from closing. You should ask them for advice - they
would know!

You need to tell us what exactly happens when you try to
run msconfig.exe, both from the Run box and from the Command
Prompt. You should also run regedit.exe and report the data you
see against this key:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\MSCONFIG.EXE

Sorry to disagree with you craig, but you go to start, run then type cmd, it
will give you the command screen you so deire, then you type the ipconfig...

the msconfig that you use will work in start/run type or paste msconfig
enter, will open the system configuration utility in a gray box
