Start/All Programs Alignment

H

Howard Neil

I have just noticed a problem on my wife's computer.

The window that opens when I click Start/All Programs is too low down
the screen. There is a half inch gap at the top and the bottom is off
the bottom of the screen. I cannot repeat this problem with any other
window.

I can find no reference to this problem anywhere on Microsoft's website
or anywhere else for that matter.

Has anyone any idea of a cure, please? Perhaps someone knows of a
Registry setting that can adjust this window?

Is all of your taskbar and Start Menu button shown? It reads like the
monitor's vertical height, or vertical alignment is moving part of the
screen below the displayed area.

Yes, everything else displays correctly. This really is a puzzle.

Here are a few things to try:

Line 117. Restore Taskbar and Start Menu

- Try this: Right-click the Start button, and change icons to
large/small, then back to the preferred setting. That might reset
something..

- Try the many suggestions here; scroll down to "Start Menu" section.
The "Start Menu Scrolling - Enable" might be just what's needed.

Thanks for that, Elmo. I have to go out now but have bookmarked the
pages and will try them later. I'll let you know the result.

Hi Elmo, sorry about the delay in replying.

Thank you for the suggestions but neither have worked. This particular
window still remains badly aligned.

Open Display Properties, Settings tab, Advanced button, and change the
DPI setting to Normal. See if that helps.

I checked and it was shown as Normal. I changed it to a higher setting
and re-booted. The errant window was then higher up the screen but the
bottom of the window was still off the bottom of the screen. The
computer also became very slow. I changed back to Normal and re-booted.
The problem is still there. I am convinced that it is something that
relates to this specific window. There is nothing wrong with any other
window.

A few other things to try:

- Right-click the top blank space. Is there an option to Delete the
blank filename? Delete it and see if that helps. Or just click/drag
the space downwards to see if it can be placed between other entries.

- Click Start, Run, type SFC /SCANNOW, click OK. If any files are
damaged or missing, they'll be replaced. You may need to reboot
afterwards so damaged files will be replaced. (No reason for this to
work though.)

- Explore to "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Start Menu" and delete or
rename "desktop.ini". (Once again, I don't know that this would help;
it's just something to try. I saw no difference here when I renamed the
file.)

Thanks for the suggestions.

1. There is no top blank space. the words go right to the top of the
window. It is the top of the All programs window that is too far down
the screen.

2. I have already tried SFC and it didn't work.

I have tried renaming desktop.ini and, as you suspect, it made no
difference.

A few Google Groups search results on similar problems:

New mouse has option to open window where pointer is located.
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...start+menu"+alignment&rnum=1#0eb1e65424e88136

You might look through these.

Only other two suggestions, change to Large Icons and see if that helps:

R-click the Start Button, click Properties, Start Menu tab, Customize
button, Large Icons.

Or, change text sizes. R-click the Desktop, click Properties,
Appearance tab, Advanced button, a few items are associated with fonts size.

The mouse (an elderly Trust mouse) does not seem to have this option.

I had already tried these and none made any difference. :-(
