Standby

Win XP Home standby sometimes works right for as long a two hours, other
times it fails after various lengths of time. Any suggestions will be most
welcome. Not much help from the XP groups. I turn off all background
programs that might stimulate system, and suspend cable modem. MS web site
no help.

Event viewer lists a swarm of events. I turned off security alerts in
secu.center. I'd guess that won't help much. Haven't found a way, studying
the swarm, to make any adjustment to 'puter that would stop it from goosing
system into an awake state.
Thanks for your input.

You narrow down problems in EV by when they occurred,
and dbl/click on each one.

|Done, Meerkat. It may have been cancelling security center, show alerts,
though that doesn't make immediate intuitive sense, to me. Anyway, just now,
standby worked, i.e. endured, for three hours!

Disconnect Ethernet wire and try again.

Thanks, Paul. Ethernet internet provider answered my query about modem
standby, which I've been using, and sometimes works - keeps standby mode
constant -saying that modem standby is sufficient; I'll try the unplugging
the wire and see if that's a permanent solution.

Unplugging the wire is just a diagnostic procedure, to prove the
Ethernet is doing it. Unplug after putting the computer in standby.
If the problem stops, then the next thing to do, is visit the Ethernet
chip settings in Windows and figure out why.

If you have "wake on" anything enabled in the bios, this will over ride
standby and any other power settings you have enabled in windows.
If this is an integrated(on mainboard) LAN connection look to the bios especially
