i defragmented my hard drive yesterday, and now my pc won't go on standby
like it used to... i'm pretty sure no programs are running (at least, not
according to the taskbar)... power management is set to go standby after 5
minutes, and turn off the monitor and hard drive at the same time... it
worked fine until i did the defrag... suggestions?

Sorry, I have no idea how to fix your problem. But I was wondering why you'd
want to stress out your system like that by turning off the hard drive so
frequently?

where do i find one of these 'ram washer' programs you speak of? i've never
heard of them... ps: how is turning off my hard drive while on standby
'stressing out' my system? i'm not sure where you live, but where i live,
electricity isn't cheap...

A hard drive running at idle consumes around 8.1W of power. I don't know how
expensive your electricity is, but can't imagine a hard drive left running
is going to enough to worry about. On the other hand, the mechanics of the
hard drive is stressed the most on startup (as any machine) and the changes
in temperature of the metals cause expansion and contraction adding for
more stress on the device.

As to the "ram washer" quote, that comes from a Wintard around here who
claims to use it. Whether it's a miniature dishwasher with small racks for
RAM sticks or something else, I have no idea. It's just a glowing example
of some of the stupidity perpetuated by Windoze users.
