Stand-alone too Domain Controller question

Within the next 2-3 weeks I will be receiving a Windows 2000 Server from
another office within our org. We currently have several Win2k and WinXP
stand alone computers networked. My question is what do I have to do to the
stand alones to be authenticated thru the domain controller? Will it see the
change automatically? or do I have to reconfigure something on each of the
stand alones?

Thanks
Steve

I assume you mean you want to join them to the domain?? If that is so you
have to configure each computer to use the IP address of the domain
controller as their preferred dns server in tcp/ip properties and that would
be there ONLY dns server unless you add more domain controllers. Then you
have to join each computer to the domain. You can use system
properties/computer name/change and then enter the name of the domain you
want to join to. You will then be prompted for credentials of a domain
administrator to join the computer to the domain. If successful you will get
a "welcome to xxx domain" and have to reboot the computer. A server needs to
be promoted to domain controller via dcpromo before it is a domain
controller. See the link below on Active Directory dns as proper dns
configuration is CRITICAL to having a successful domain. --- Steve
