spell check won't work

I am using MS Outlook Express 6 and can not get the spell check to work.
This is the Outlook Express that came bundled with the MS Windows XP Home
that came with this new computer. We have had it about a month.
Every time I click on the spell check icon, after composing an email, I get
the message "an error occured while spelling was being checked".
I am also currently running MS Offcie 97 on the machine. The Spell Check on
my Word 97 is functioning properly.
