Ad-Aware 2008, Spybot S&D, A-squared, Spyware blaster are all good in
Vista. Spyware blaster is a real time monitor, A-squared is good except
it takes forever to do a scan, and all these are freeware.

There are no *good* spyware programs. All spyware programs are bad and
should be avoided. Instead you should install and use *anti*-spyware
programs. ;-)

Also note that no anti-spyware is anywhere near perfect, so you should use
more than one to give you decent protection. I recommend using two or more
from the following list (all of which work under Vista):

Spybot Search and Destroy
AdAware
Spyware Blaster
Windows Defender
a-Squared
Super Antispyware

reputable download site, they're too damned stupid to be operating a

You were absolutely right to ask here. Many of the bad programs are
the easiest to come across. What the "poor thinking" naysayers do
not take into account is that you are not looking for just one person
to recommend something. Rather to sort the many. Good move!

everything you need. Another site is Tucows.

I disagree. Reviews and ratings in PC magazines are not reliable, primarily
because the magazines get most of their income from their advertisers.

Moreover several years ago, I had a young woman working for me as a
technical writer; her previous job had been as a reviewer for PC Magazine.
She wasn't a bad writer, but her knowledge of PCs and therefore abililty to
review was next to nothing. I have no confidence in their reviews.

I never mentioned a word about "reviews". What I was referring to was
the fact that one would not have to worry about picking up
trojan-laden software at those sites.

As for "reviews"... the best IMO would be the number of downloads of a
particular product. At least one of the sites I mentioned - CNET -
even lists the Top 20 downloads across the entire field.

One would have to be blind not to find two or three good
anti-virus/anti-malware programs on that list.

OK, I understand now, but that wasn't clear from your message. The OP said

everything you need." That sure sounded to me like you were recommending
sites that would give him the recommendations he wanted--in other words,
reviews.
