SP4 update screwed my computer...NEED HELP!

Hey everyone,

With this MS Blast worm going around I went and
downloaded the newest security update and then downloaded
the Service Pack 4 update. After restarting my computer
it gives me an error message "STOP: 0x0000007B
(....,....,....,....)INACESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE." I have
tried booting with Win 2000 boot disks, the CD ROM and
nothing works. I tried safe mode, safe w/ networking,
safe w/ prompt, last known good configuration, and so on.
I am getting the same error message. I even tried booting
from a my Norton Antivirus disk. Anyone have any help???
Desperate,

Steve

Steve,

Good luck - had the same problem with a Dell laptop and
followed all the recommended fixes, repairs...etc.
Nothing from Microsoft has worked so far - tried Norton,
booting into Win98, DOS.
Win2k safe won't work, repair won't work.
I am ordering a disk from Dell that hopefully I can boot
and repair the primary.
If you find another solution, let me know.

A very unsatisfied Microsoft customer - ;(

I have also received the same INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
Error. I have followed all the replies below to fix the
situation. What I have noticed is that the partitions no
longer come up as NTFS. I have used an aftermarket disk
view utility to inspect them. I have also put the drives
that failed into another server so I could view the data
and back it up which I have now done with no problems.

If anyone has corrected this yet please let me know.

Fabio,

I have already tried doing that but my computer will not
boot from the CD or Win2k boot disks....booting from the
cd begins to start, then says "...failure"....booting from
a boot disk begins then stops giving me "Disk I/O error."
I cannot do anything here. I tried a Win 98 boot disk
and running Scandisk but that doesnt catch anything and
because it is Win 98, I cannot do CHKDSK. Any other
thoughts??

Hi again Steve

Sounds stupid, but have you checked those two things:

- See the Boot Options in your BIOS and see if one of them is the FLOPPY
Drive.

- Try the Boot Disks with another PC and verify if none of the is bad.

Please let me know what you found out. Thanks and Regards,

Fabio

Well I solved my boot disk error...turns out that my disk
1 was a bad disk. So i did a repair on the operating
system then it rebooted and after the Win2000 logo screen
is goes to a setup screen saying "Setup is being
restarted..." Then my computer restarts and the cycle
continues. Any idea what is wrong here??

Hi again

- did you try again? (could simply be Setup was not finished)

- If this problem persists, you could try to do an Inplace Upgrade of
Windows 2000.

If you consider this, please read the following two MS KB-Articles first:

- "How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows 2000":

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;292175

and

- "What an In-Place Windows 2000 Upgrade Changes and What It Does Not
Change":

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;306952

Please let me know what you found out. Thanks and Regards,

Fabio
