SP4 causes CPU Utilization in Services.exe Increases to 100 Percent

M

Mr Smith

My wife installed SP4 on her machine, which was working well and had SP3 and
hotfixes installed. Since installing SP4 services.exe regularly uses up to
100% of the cpu. The only reference I can find for this problem is
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 328885, which suggests that SP4 will fix
the problem. In our experience, SP4 caused the problem.

The symptoms are exactly as described in the KB article.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you are not using any of the RPC services you can disable the server
service, there is one error this will generate, a net-perf error. but if you
are a stand alone system not connected to a server this should not be a
problem.

Bob,
I stand corrected. Wanted to respond concerning "disabling" RPC. I mispoke,
when I said I had set it to "manual". Musta been something else.

I went back and reset RPC to "disable" and booted. Had a mess. Didn't
realize of my C++ programs where functionality is split between myself and
the remote server could or would not function properly. Also, some websites
were using it where I had stock charts that were interactive. Well to make a
long story, long, I could not restart RPC, and the world came tumbling down.
I finally had to go to the registry to get it started, and then wipe all the
squaks in the Event "system" and "applications" Viewer.

Bottom line, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

sorry,
