SP2 update then "limited connectivity"

Small 4 computer peer to peer network, working fine. I added a 300GB hard
drive to my file server and had to update to SP2 to use all of it. Hard drive
works fine, but now my network connection says "limited or no connectivity".
If I restore back to my original XP- network works OK. Connection details say
that network failed to assign a network address, although the details screen
gives a physical address, an IP address and a subnet mask. Any help greatly
appreciated.

Does the network work right on the file server? If so, there's
nothing wrong.

That message is new in SP2. It means that a network connection is
configured to obtain an IP address automatically, but it can't
communicate with a DHCP server to get an address. After trying for
about a minute, it gives up and assigns itself an automatic private IP
address in the 169.254.x.x. range. If all of the computers have
similar addresses, all is well.

In that case, you can disable the error message:

1. Right-click the network connection.
2. Click Properties.
3. Un-check "Notify me when this connection has limited or no
connectivity".

Are you using a wireless router?
