SP2 slows xp - removed service - need help

I installed SP2 and my macine slowed to a crawl. The problem is the Shell
Hardware Detection service. I disabled the service and almost everything was
ok, sans autoplay. I now am left with a machine that I can't shut down using
the Start|Shutdown button. When I try it the system goes into a locked state
except for ctrl-alt-del which I can use to shut down the machine.

Any ideas on either why the service causes the failure or what is going on
with the shutdown button would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill

Bill, your machine shouldn't slow down with SP2.......unless your scraping
the barrel on available ram memory in the first place !

In Google there are a number of others who have had similar problems:

What error reports are being generated in Event Viewer. Note the Shell
Hardware Detection Service is dependent in the Remote Procedure Call
(RPC) service so error reports on that service may also be relevant!

Is your Windows XP Home Edition or Professional?

Have you installed all updates since SP2?

Hope this helps.
