SP2 now causes slow bootup

Hi. It seems to now take at least 5 min from when the VGA BIOS screens are
complete booting to when I see the initial black Windows XP startup screen
ever since I updated to SP2. During those 5 min, only a Black screen appears
with the small vertical bars on the bottom and it fills up the bars to solid
white 1 third of the way thru as if it were doing a scandisk or something,
then it fills the remaining 2 thirds pretty quick and boots up normally.
During the slowdown, the HDD light is constantly on.

I did a system restore before SP2 and this did not fix the xtra 5 min delay
I now have. Undoing this restore, and going back to SP2, I still have the 5
min delay and , in addition, a wasted 1.5G of Harddrive space with all these
restore points from going back and forth between SP1 and SP2.

So how can I regain my disk space back (where i can still go back to a
system restore point prior to SP2) and, more importantly, how do I get rid
of the xtra 5 min delay at boot up?? All logical drives are fragmented like
2%. I have a P4 2.4G Genuine Intel with 512 M of RAM and Intel 845 graphics.
TIA.
