SP2 Install problem

Background - I have 5 Toshiba Portege 3505 Tablet PC's in my small company
network. (Specs: Intel Pent III- M 1.3 GHz w/ 496 MB Ram and 27 GB of free
space on C: drive) OS was an OEM install (now showing as Ver. 5.1 Build
2600.xpsp2.030422-1633: Service Pack 1)

I downloaded the SP2 from microsoft (download took about 40 min) an began
the install. After completing what appeared to be about 50% of the install I
got some access denied message boxes, retry didnt work so I chose ignore.
The install failed thereafter and appeared to uninstall all that had be
completed to that moment. Upon reboot I received a message that some windows
programs may no longer work.

System event viewer states:

Windows XP Service Pack 2 installation failed.
Access is denied. Ev ID 4373

....and...

Windows XP Service Pack 2 installation failed, leaving Windows XP partially
updated.
Service Pack 2 installation did not complete. Ev ID 4374

I cannot use "System Restore". All I can get is an empty window titled
System Restore" - nothing else.

I tried to redownload the SP2 and on the reinstall attempt it craps out
almost immediately. I get the following in the event viewer:

Windows XP Service Pack 2 installation failed.
An internal error occurred. EV ID 4373

Any sugesstions?

For your consideration: Try very hard to bootup into Safe Mode. Hope to login ok. Then bring up System Restore to see what it has.

Keep this next item as a measure of next to last resort:
The MS Knowledge Base article noted below, may help in restoring a "prior XP
System Restore point", in the case where you are unable to do this from a
Windows session. This article describes how to start the System Restore
tool when you are unable to start your Windows XP-based computer normally or
in Safe mode.
You may be able to do it from a "special command prompt"..."Safe Mode with Command Prompt".

It would seem the requirements are:
1. Your system HD still has restore point(s) from before. (Which also means System Restore is active on your XP.)
2. You have to be able to "selectively" bootup your pc into "Safe mode with command prompt".
3. Follow the directions to use "rstrui.exe" the XP System Restore program.

HOW TO: Start the System Restore Tool from a Command Prompt ( MS Knowledge Base Article 304449)

So the problems begin...

Were you/are you logged on the computers as a member of the administrators
group? Did you disable anti-virus, firewall software first? Shutdown all apps?
Since SP2 was just released, there isn't a lot of info on the problems cropping up.

I wish people wouldn't be in such a hurry to install these service packs...
