sp2 has slowed machine

hey there

I installed sp2 a few weeks ago and as per many other uses out there it has
drastically slowed my boot time, I.e. when windows first starts up it loads
into my desktop then chugs for about 5 minutes and everytime I move the
cursor down to the start bar it indicates that its busy. apart from that my
machine seems to run fine. after about 5 minutes Norton antivirus icon
appears in the system tray and all seems to be good. I also have Norton
internet security and ever since I installed sp2 the system tray icon will
not appear anymore.
I have tried defragging and basically running every tool to improve system
performance, still no fixing the problem.
I thought that maybe it might be the Norton products but I cant see how, it
is very commercial and im sure that Microsoft has taken them into account.
so what I was wondering is has anyone else had this problem and been able to
fix it, or know of any reason for this problem, any info would be greatly
appreciated

I have a Pentium 2.2 ghtz / 512 meg ram / sound blaster live / NVIDIA
geforce 4 mx 440 and 2 harddrives could any of these be causing a problem
??

cheers

5-Minutes means you have a problem. First, I would check to see
how many startup watchdog apps and services are running. Run
Msconfig and note the startup entries. Next, I would check the Sys
and Application event logs ( Start, Run (type) Eventvwr.msc).Look
for any Red icons that denote errors. Double-Click each one to see
the description and Event ID #. Services may be timing out and that
is causing your excessive delay. A "normal" XP system should be
done with booting in around 45-seconds to a minute.
You can lookup Event ID#'s here:
http://www.eventid.net/
A couple of manual "Live Updates" would probably help you out.

It is possible that just about any program loading at start up can have
problems and there have been many instances were Norton products are the
problem. The best thing to do is clean boot troubleshooting to identify
what programs / services are the hanging up. Be methodical. See these

thanks for your help

I found that it was the world wide web publishing that was causing the
problem. it was not starting up properly. I turned the service off using
msconfig, now the puter starts up fine !!
cant believe that I didn't think of doing this in the first place

thanks heaps
