SP2 general availability

When will SP2 be available to the general public on a cd? i don't
relish the thought of a four hour download. Also, can I get an order
in to Microsoft for one of these cd's? How? Thanks.

Windows XP SP2 has not been released yet.
We are still developing and testing it.
see
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/sp2preview.mspx

When it is released later this year it will be available via a number of
means.
These will all be covered on the Windows XP SP2 web page once it is released

I'll say. I have a very fast DSL, usually downloading about 2.7 Mbs, and it
took me 15 minutes. Must have been a T1.

A T1 is typically a 1.5 Mbit connection. 1.5Mbits per second = 1.5MBytes
every 8 seconds. 270MB, on a maxed out T1, then would take 36 minutes
(270 x 8 / 60). Your mileage may vary.

XP SP2 will be available next month...OEM's will have it by then as well,
and all New PC's will have to have it pre-installed no later than October

Will RC3 be out soon then? It's difficult to know if the existing
issues in RC2 have been fixed without that. MS aren't even
acknowledging bug reports on SP2 at the moment so it's hard to know
what the progress is...

There will not be an RC3.
We are close to RTM now.

That's scary.

Given the state of RC2 I'll probably just refuse to run/install if SP2
is present. It's not safe to do otherwise.

Why ? - given your scenario above we would never release a product since you
would expect continuous RCs until "you" saw no more issues. We draw the
line when the reported issues are exceedingly low and we fix those then RTM.
We are not required to send out another build; although we have made a build
later then RC2 available to our Technical Beta Program participants to do
some final testing on. Note the Preview Program was just that it was not
our primary source of feedback and bug reports.

Come to Japan. :) 100 Mbps fiber optic unshared now typical in homes.

Shows that there are still some rationales for legal, regulated monopolies.
Government to NTT: We give you a license to basically print money. Broadband
is a national priority; use some of that money to get the country wired, and
quickly. NTT to government: Yes sir! We're on it right now.

But the US has deregulated just about everything, meaning it controls just
about nothing. Often, that's good. But the rub comes when one confuses
'often' with 'always'. <g>
