You can download the released version of the MSJVM removal tool here:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/MSJVM-Removal-Tool.shtml

You can read about Microsoft's position regarding the use of this tool here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;826878

If you want to reinstall the MSJVM starting with v3805, here's a how-to:

Well George, thanks for all of your help. I am actually using Mozilla
Firefox for most internet use - but funnily enough, it doesn't always work
well with MS sites (!). I am using Sun Java for some educational sites which
require java to run the software. I will disable the msjava as you indicate
and look out for the official removal route when it moves from beta testing.

Thanks again, Mel

anyone tells you. It's just that Sun's are not well addressed. The security
issues really lie in IE. But like I said if you don't visit boneheaded sites or
before you do tighten down ALL your security you'll be fine. You just have to
watch out for these free web hosting sites. They are immersed in these Internet
nasties. Often sites willcleaning out all the nasties. That's IE for you. Mozilla I hear is pretty good
to guard against that.

I "appear" to have resolved the problem by the simple expedient of replacing
these files (which I renamed) with ones for the latest version from my other
(XP) PC

C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\JAVART.DLL
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\JVIEW.EXE
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\MSJAVA.DLL

qfecheck now say's all is OK ! and jview in the command prompt says version
(3810)

So perhaps it is cured?

You may be okay, if the files stay replaced. The registry entry for
Q816093 under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows
2000\SP-1 on my machine shows that those three files were replaced in
\WINNT\System32 and also in \WINNT\System32\DllCache. If you don't
replace the files in both places, the System File Checker may restore the
old versions.

The update also included a replacement for msjdbc.zip in
\WINNT\java\classes.

I don't know Mel_P. Yes jview and qfecheck says everything's alright but the thing that is still not fixed is
the roadblock we ran into. You went around it (which sometimes can be a good thing) but I believe it is still
there. I was really hoping wayfarrer had it for what he had there made a lot of sense. All but the "Release"
version of the msjava uninstall. I still wouldn't trust it Release or not.

Hello Gary,

The vesions in the cache (C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386) are 3805 whereas
the versions in the System32 are 3810. So I will look out for that possible
"swop".

Re msjdbc.zip - the version in \java\classes has files dated 6/12/99

In the service pack folder they have a date 22/7/2002.

BUT MS says this file should be deleted
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/268180/en-us)

So puzzled.

That makes sense because 3805 was distributed as part of a service pack.
Later versions up to 3810 are patches. The cache folder I was referring
to though is \System32\dllcache. That's where backup copies of the system
protected files are stored. I have a copy of each of the three 3810 files
in there.

Curiously, I no longer have a copy of msjava.dll in System32. Possibly
the installation of Sun Java caused its removal, but I wouldn't expect
that. Evidently because I'm using Sun Java now, its absence doesn't seem
to cause any problems.

Yeah. me too. My copy of that file in the \java\classes folder contains
files dated 02/24/2003.

Hi Gary

BUT.... I don't have a folder called "dllcache" anywhere on my system?
NOR is there one on my wifes XP PC? Global search on c:\ shown only copies
in system32 + service pack folder.

A search of MS site suggests that I should I have such a folder on Win2k Pro
but I don't have one??

Mel.

It's a hidden folder:

Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options...| View to make things in your power. Read the options for what to change there.
