sp1 necessary?

Sally P.

Hello,

I have a notebook computer, running XP Pro, that I bought in Sept.
2001. As I was traveling with it immediately after purchase, I did not
install SP1. I have kept up with all other critical updates since. Q:
should I install SP1 at this late date? The computer has been running
fine, and I haven't wanted to tamper with a good setup (one that now
has all kinds of other software installed, including Norton AF and
Firewall, as well as language software for XP. But am I missing
important security updates that may have been in SP1 but not
elsewhere?

Thanks for any advice!

Hi Sally,

If you install SP1 using the express option, it will only add any missing
updates. And yes, you should install it. Make sure you disable Norton's
before you begin.

Hey Sally,

Yes, do install Windows XP Sp1 immediately. It includes several security
patchs, updates and fixes to ther operating system, Windows XP. In a couple
of weeks, Microsoft will be releasing a new service pack, Service 2.

I also do recommend you updating to Windows XP Service Pack 2 as soon as it
comes out.

Thanks and good luck!

A quick question or two, Rick, if I might trouble you!

1) if I install SP1 using the express option, will I still be given
the option to "Archive Files"? I'd like to be able to uninstall SP1
using Add/Remove programs if there's a problem.

2) Does it matter if I install SP1 or SP1a? I just discovered that
there were two on the MS site...

Thanks again,

Sally

Hi Sally,

1) Yes

2) Only SP1a is actually available, though many references refer to just
SP1.
