SP1 help needed

R

Ryka

After spending countless hours on the phone with MS techs, I still am unable
to install the Stand Alone SP1. Since SP1 would not download from the Update
site (which it did appear on), I was told to download the Stand Alone and
save to my desktop. It downloaded after a little over an hour, but every
time it loads half way through the first stage, says there is an Internal
Error (Code 800B0100). There is a page to go to for instructions and I have
run the checkdisk, scannow, and memory diagnostic tool several times to no
avail. Today the tech tried to install it in Safe Mode with everything
disabled - still no install past the same spot and it's the same code. He
said he has to consult with others and will call again tomorrow. After four
days of calls, etc. I am very frustrated. Do any of you have any ideas as to
why the download will not install? All ideas appreciated!

Ryka

No. The tech disabled everything - including the two gadgets. All programs
were disables and everything MS as well. Printer was disconnected, etc. This
is the first time I have had a problem with Updates requiring more than one
re-try. I do not have a Vista cd - the os came with the HP desktop
computer. It's d4790y with Home Premium, 2 gigs, etc.

R

Ryka

No - this has never been mentioned, but I see, checking my Update history,
that this was successfully installed on my computer.

R

Ryka

What is a dead system clock battery???? How would I know if I have the
problem? How do I resolve the problem? Shouldn't checkdisk or scannow show
these problems?

Ryka,

The only thing that comes to mind is either a hardware or driver
conflict that sounds like it couldn't be found by Microsoft. If they
don't know what it is, I'm not sure I can do much better. Maybe post
your hardware specs and we can see if there's something that stands out.
Input from our member community on this one will be welcome.

I'm wondering if this is because your system software (Vista) is OEM from
HP, which might be the cause of this.

I know on some systems certain companies has the bios set up to only use
their pre-programmed versions of O/S..

I'm wondering if HP might be able to assist you..

I don't know if this will assist in solving your problem, but HP is not
offering SP1 where NVidia graphics chip is installed:

See this item in following link

Microsoft has reported that certain audio chip sets will fail when SP1 is
installed causing the sound features to stop working. Audio chip
manufacturers are working with Microsoft to create updated drivers to
resolve this issue.
NOTE: For some reason, this sound issue may be reported as a error with
the co-processor driver. The problem will be resolved when updated sound
drivers are available.

HP recommends that PCs with the nVidia graphics chip should not install SP1
at this time. To determine the type of graphics/audio chip in a PC, click
Start , Help & Support , and then click System information . In the left
panel, click Graphics & Display to identify the video/audio chipset
manufacturer.
HP will make updated drivers available as quickly as possible through the HP
Update and HP Health Check utilities. You should run these utilities at
least once a week to check for all HP updated drivers.
If you have already installed SP1, you can either use the PC without sound
until the updated drivers for that specific model are available, or you can
uninstall SP1 at this time.

Had the same problem and error code. Microsoft tech traced it to corrupted
system files and did an upgrade reinstall of Vista which allowed install of
SP1 on first try. Unfortunately you need a Vista disc to repair those files.

M

Mark L. Ferguson

Thanks. Well, there IS a way to restore those kind of corruptions from an
image file (.wim) but it requires a 1 gig download for 'ximage.exe' in the
resource kit, to do the replace. This article goes through the technique (
for another file used for update.) You could use SFC to identify the corrupt
files.

The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the
computer restarts when you try to install an update in Windows Vista :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358/en-us

and for SFC
Some Windows Vista functions may not work, or Windows Vista may stop
responding: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
