SP 2 update, access denied

I am trying to update Windows XP to SP2 on a dell computer that is about 2
years old. I have uninstalled all the excess spyware and antivirus software
that was not needed. I also disabled McAfee via the msconfig. The
installation stalls about 1/3 of the way through and gives the message
access denied. I had this happen about two years ago on an HP computer and
think the issue is in the registry but can't remember how to fix it.
