SP 1

Hi,

I installed all the programs, and was doing Windows Update. The website
suggested that I install SP 1 as well as other security patches for XP. When
downloading, backing up system files and installing files, I got this window
popup saying "Windows will shutdown now and RPC was terminated
unexpectedly". The pc restarted itself during the installation of system
files and now the OS cannot boot.

Could it be that I was hit by Blaster? Cause I did disable my Norton
Internet Security at the time of installing SP 1.

What should I do next? Can I use the Repair option in the XP CD or just
reformat the whole pc?

Thanks,

Elsie

Hi Elsie,

The SP1 install is handled separately. No other updates should have been
involved with that. A repair install will remove all updates, including
SP1. However, you may want to install the patch after the repair and before
doing anything else:

Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q315341

This script removes all variants of the W32.Blaster.Worm (original, B, C, D,
E and F) and will inform you whether or not the patch is already installed.
With a prompt to do so. http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm.

Hi Kelly,

But I can't boot XP, Blaster shut it down when some system files are still
installing, as a result, the OS can't boot up. BIOS will boot, when the XP
logo comes on, the whole pc restarts.

Perhaps, I should re-format then do the SP1 install with my antivirus
enabled?

I'm thinking of reformatting the whole pc and this time, run windows update
with my Antivirus and internet security enabled....will blaster be erased
from the hdd?
