Hi,

What are the differences between SP 1 and SP 1a?
Can I download the SP and install in without using Windows update?

Also yes you can download the entire 134MB update directly and then apply
it.
Just download the Network Installation version from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp

Isn't the 134MB size for the original SP1? I thought SP1a
was 125MB for the full download

Yes SP1a is about 125MB (I was probably looking at the SP1 file size).
The reduction is size is due in some part to the removal of certain
Microsoft Java Virtual Machine components etc.

Only that SP1a leaves out the Java virtual machine, in accordance with a
court ruling.

Go to
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp

and you can take the 'Network' download at the right - 130MB in one
piece. Given broadband I regard it as better than the express method.
Also down at the bottom is the link to order it on CD . $10 plus S&H

Hi,
Can I download SP 1? the link in the previous post is for SP 1a, which
excludes java vm. so I would have to go download java vm separately?

SP1 is no longer available.
We had to produce SP1a without the Microsoft Java VM to comply with the
rulings in a legal matter.

Greetings --

As the result of a lawsuit by Sun Microsystems, and the ensuing
settlement, Microsoft is no longer allowed to provide its own Java
Virtual Machine to Windows users. You can get almost the same
functionality by downloading Sun's version of Java from
http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html. If you want the broader
capabilities of Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine, it is still
available from a lot of 3rd-party web sites, some of which are listed
here: http://www.java-virtual-machine.net/download.html.

If you do choose the Microsoft JVM, be sure to visit Windows
Update to apply a needed security patch.
