SP 1 download and installation

I have unsuccesfully tried to install Windows XP SP1
three times. Each time the cursor has been frozen upon
restarting after the download and installation. The last
time I did a repair from my Windows XP professional
installation CD which cured the problem by uninstalling
SP 1. Each time I have contacted Microsoft Support, who
have directed me to uninstall the service pack, but have
offered no solution for the installation problem. I have
a Dell Dimension 8250 computer which came with Windows Xp
Home Edition which I upgraded to Profeesioanl with an
academic version purchased through school. Help!!!

This is what I would do. Stop all third party applications, including
antivirus from running. Close down any unneeded running service and then
install the service pack.

If you have broadband, download the full version of SP1 - the Network
button on the page, and burn to a CD. Or else use the link at the
bottom of the page to order it on CD ($10).

Then you need to be sure nothing is running in the background when you
do the installation - use MSConfig.exe and uncheck the 'Startup ' items,
and I would also on its Services page check 'hide Microsoft' and uncheck
others things for the duration, then reboot. Be off line to while you
do the install
