SOYO upgrade

I can't upgrade to XP for Win98 without the computer locking up, even
after 2 hours with a support tech. The motherboard is a SOYO SY-7VEM with a
Pentium III-600 processor and 128 MB memory. It runs a VIA chipset for
integrated video and sound.
Has anyone else had this problem or have any suggestions? Thanks in
advance.

Not without some specifics.
It almost sounds like you WOULDN'T WANT to upgrade.
That's a pretty sparse machine for Windows XP.

Did you use the Windows XP Upgrade Advisor to see any conflicts?

Do your hardware components even have Windows XP Drivers available?
Download:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
Run it and get a list of hardware and check for drivers..

This motherboard:
http://www.motherboard.cz/mb/soyo/SY-7VEM.htm

Has these updates/drivers:

BIOS (use with caution):
http://www.soyo.com.tw/downloads/se...e=&col1=Motherboard&col2=13&col3=BIOS+Upgrade
(Last Update 07-31-2001 - ouch...)

VIA 4-in-1 (Chipset)

Onboard Video

Onboard Audio

Quick Settings Guide

So you probably have your own NIC/Modem/etc...

There's very little inofrmation you've provided to help us help you with the
lockup problem, but I wanted to point out one thing: 128MB of RAM, despite
its exceeding the official minimum requirement, is way too little to run
Windows XP with anything approaching acceptable speed. A minimum of 256MB is
needed, and more than that if you run any demanding applications.
