Sound volume settings

I have a Toshiba Tecra M6 with SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio. When I
click on the sound icon in the systray & set the volume to high in the mixer,
the setting will not stay & the sound slides back to zero. This happens when
I'm playing a CD or talking on Skype. I have to manually keep my cursor on
the volume & keep sliding it up to 100.

I can't find a volume setting in the control panel. The sound icon has
every unuseful tab & configuration/properties buttons except a volume setting
bar. I'm seriously considering going back to XP; it appears that the nerds
at MS never took a class in change management. They sure took their users
out of their comfort zone when they introduced Vista!

Where can I set the volume controls so they stick?

The sound settings you can have available in Vista are integrated with
whatever controls your sound chip manufacturer included in their drivers.
The same Windows mixer settings are accessible by right click from the
speaker icon or from the Sound applet in control panel. My sound chipset is
Realtek and all of the controls are present. It's possible your sound driver
installation is corrupt or requires updating. Look for updated Vista drivers
at the SoundMax support website.

Thanks for your interest. My firewall is the MS default and the anti-virus
program is Avira Antivir PE. I have several antispyware programs running as
they all seem to defend against different things and being located overseas I
have to worry more about this than viruses. These include (in the background
real time): Spyware Doctor, Spyware Terminator, SpywareBlaster and
SpywareGuard. I also run A- Squared, Ad-Aware SE and AVG Anti-Spyware when I
want to cross check things.

Actually, I would be satisfied if the sound icon in the Vista control panel
would just simply give me the tools to set the toggle for high volume & leave
it there, like RealTek does. I'm not impressed with either SoundMax or the
Vista control panel; it uneccesarily complicates what used to be an
intuitive, simple process.

What firewall, anti-virus application or security suite is installed? There
are some that cause problems.

Thanks for your interest, but I clearly stated that I had clicked on the
sound icon in the systray and the mixer doesn't appear to work properly. Nor
by clicking on the sound icon in the control panel do I get the toggle
switches one typically finds with RealTek. I believe the SoundMax utilities
are useless & may have to replace it with a better audio software.

Hi,

I'm having a similar problem with my Toshiba Tecra M7 with a RealTek
integrated soundcard. I'm getting no sound at all. It worked when I first got
the computer a couple of months ago. The problem seemed to happen after
Windows performed an update.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been trying to fix this for
about a month now.
