Sound under certain ID's only

After a recent reinstall of xp I discovered I had no system sounds and Control panel/Sounds and audio devices/volume indicated no audio device. However other id's (my wife) and a guest ID have normal sound and the same control panel function indicates there is an audio device. Any thoughts
