Sound Recorder for Long MP3 recording

G

Greg Brown

I have a need to make sound recordings (I would speak into a
microphone) to be put into MP3 format. The files might be up to an
hour (or more) long.
Does anyone know of any free applications that can do this, or if not
free, what is a good application for this?

Thanks!

WavePad (www.nch.com.au) is not free but it's a terrific tool
to do this sort of thing. I use it all the time. You simply set it to
recording mode, then you speak at your leisure. Later on you
edit your recording by cutting away pauses and repetitions,
applying fade-ins and fade-outs, normalising and filtering. You
can then save the file in just about any format, including .WAV
in case you wish to record a music CD (as opposed to .MP3
files).

You cound use Audacity, which is free,
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

It is multi-track recording software, serious overkill for your needs.
You can export the files to MP3, though you may need plugins.

You can also use High Criteria's Total Recorder, which is very flexible but
not free, and will also do things like record into shorter sections with
overlaps. It works very well.

Patrick, you are correct that a plug-in is needed for Audacity for MP3 file
output but it is available right at the website. No problem at all to
install.
