sound recorder does not record

After trying a microphone on computer, I can't record, the green line stay's
flat. I've tried the mike on two other pcs and can record. Now I've made sure
microphone is not muted, sound level turned up, and speaker level turned up
too.
When I speak through the microphone, I can hear my voice through the
speakers, I can hear music played through the speakers so it is only the
sound recorder which is not picking up and recording. Someone says to make
sure soundcard is recognized, but I don't know what is meant by that. Any
ideas....

Double click on the speaker icon in the task tray. Click on options, then
properties. Make sure there's a check mark by "Mic".

I did that and still no luck! my sound card works in every other way. play
music even recorded some old tapes to my hard drive but this voice recorder
has got me stumped

Ummm I'm kinda stumped too. On the sound properties dialog, did you make
sure that the input volume was turned up above zero?
