sound has disappeared

I believe I have a faulty cd drive which has caused major problem in
booting up. The drive seems to be spinning continuously. Sometimes I
can get the cd to show in explorer. Now the sound has disappeared.
Could I have a corrupt sound driver. How would I go about reinstalling
the sound driver

Unplug the Ide cable form the cd and reboot. See what that does.
