Sound gone after SP2 update

Since I installed SP2, I have no sound. Device Manager says that my
Multimedia Audio Controller has no driver installed. Two questions, please.
1 How do I update a driver, as I don't know how to find the make of the
Controller(says Generic).
2 Is there another way to get my sound back?
Thanks

You must know what sound card you have. Look on your receipt/invoice for
the computer - ask the people you bought the system from, open it up and
look, etc.

There are applications out there that can identify what hardware you have,
but I think they all depend on a properly installed system - as I think they
pull the information from the registry. Perhaps they do not - so I will
recommend you try two different ones:

EVEREST Home Edition

Belarc Advisor

Once you know what you have, what next? Go get the latest driver for your
hardware/OS from the manufacturer's web page. For example, let's say you
have an NVidia chipset video card or ATI video card, perhaps a Creative
Labs sound card or C-Media chipset sound card...

NVidia Video Card Drivers

ATI Video Card Drivers

Creative Labs Sound Device

C-Media Sound Device

Good luck!

Randy;
Where did you get the sound card?
Did it come with the computer?
If so, go to the computer manufacturers website and get the latest
Windows XP drivers.
Invoice should give necessary details.

The sound card is a Creative Soundblaster Live! edition. It is the
multimedia audio controller that I can't identify. I will try the sites you
suggested. Thanks to both of you. The quest continues.

I am having the same problem - I cannot seem to get the "found new hardware"
wizard to detect the drivers on my driver cd either. It just keeps telling me
cannot install hardware. Did you get yours working? I believe I have
Soundblaster Audigy.

Also, the error message I get when I double click on the volume box in the
system tray is:

"Unable to detect any series of Soundblaster soundcards. The application
will exit."

However, my sound card is visible in device manager, and it says it is
working properly. However, when I use Creative's troubleshooting tool, it
fails because it too cannot locate my soundcard!

Thanks,
Jim

Hi,
Have you tried just going into the device manager(right click 'my
computer'-select properties-then hardware tab-then device manager), then
remove the audio device(in device manager go to Sound, video and game
controllers look for your audio device-right click then select uninstall).
Then scan for hardware changes by right clicking on 'sound, video and game
controllers' and select scan for hardware changes, then allow it to reinstall
itself? this seemed to work for me everytime my sound goes out.
