Sound file does not work.

I have tried both mp3 and a wav sound file with my pps slide show for a
target computer and neither are working. Any suggestions?

G

Guest

Are you trying to play the sound on your computer or another computer?

If the latter you must embed the sounds (wav) or add them to the folder with
the pps. If this is the case get back if you dont know how to embed sounds.

Michael Koerner

Doesn't give us much to go on. Could you tell us how you inserted your sound
files? As a suggestion you may want to put your music files into the same
folder as your presentation before you insert them. and make sure they
accompany the presentation to the target computer.

Hi, Melissa -- as with your previous questions, details help. Does the sound
play on your machine? Does it not play at all on the target computer?

If this is the case, then the problem could be with the links.

See
http://www.echosvoice.com/gotchas.htm#SoundAdvice and

Sounds/Movies don't play, images disappear or links break when I move or
email a presentation
http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00155.htm

I remember you previously mentioned low volume on the targer computer.
That's totally different than the sound not playing at all. (And if you're
using Package for CD, it should resolve the links to the sound, so there
shouldn't be a problem with the links.)

G

Guest

It works on my xp pro fine but does not work on a target. I reformatted my
mp3 to wav but that didn't change anything. I have just tried the solution
of copying all the files to the cd as opposed to just a folder. If that's
the solution I won't know until I get to the target computer tomorrow!

G

Guest

Could you tell us how you inserted your sound
files? To Michael. I inserted sound as PPt instructs. This last attempt I copied my pps to a folder (packaging option doesn't work for me) and then burned all files from the folder to a cd. Unfortunately if that's the solution I won't know until tomorrow. When I open the cd all the files are there. Does the target have to know to click on the pps presentation file to open the slide shows?
Thanks.

pptfaq from Luc: I saved this and I'm sure it will help. I'll have to get
back to everyone tomorrow to see if anything worked! Wish I had a "target"

Thanks.

Dear Echo,
I have a 2003 xp pro but I have saved the site you sent me.
Thanks for all the help.
I'll be back tomorrow if this last solution (burn files not a folder)
doesn't work!

If you use the Package for CD option and select Package to folder Then all
that is required after you copy all the files to the CD is to insert it, and
it will (should) automatically start the slide show. To ensure that your
sound will play, it is best to put the sound file into the same folder as
your presentation BEFORE you insert it into your presentation.

I'll be back tomorrow if this last solution (burn files not a folder)
doesn't work!

Before inserting the sound into PPT, put the sound into the same folder with
the PPT file and *then* insert it.

Burn files, not a folder.

Burn *all* files, including the MP3s and the PPT/PPS file.

When you were asking about this before, I thought it was just a volume
issue. Sorry 'bout that.

Melissa, it's hard telling what exactly PPT instructs at any given moment.
What instructions you're following really depend on what site/help file
you're looking at. Much easier to just tell us what you're doing, since we
can't see what you're looking at there. Just pretend we're blind and you are
our eyes.

Anyway, I'm assuming you used Insert|Movies and Sound|Sound from File. If
that's the case, then make sure the sound is in the same folder as your
PPT/PPS file before you insert it.

The sound now works on the "Target" computer!! But what comes up are all the
files and you have to click on the pps presentation file for the show to come
up.
{ ...put the sound file into the same folder as
your presentation BEFORE you insert it into your presentation} I guess this is where I get lost... I go to my PPS show in PPt program, I go to file, pkg. to cd (which doesn't work for me) so I choose the other option which is copy to folder. I go to the copy, click on it which opens up 8 or so files, select all and copy to CD. When and where would I be putting the sd.file into the folder?? Is this a drag and drop thing?

When you use the package for CD and copy to folder option, all linked files
(sound/movie) and the PowerPoint viewer are included by default. When I do
it, I use a folder on my C:\ drive called To_CD. Once PowerPoint has copied
the files to your folder, you should have a list similar to this:

AUTORUN.INF
gdiplus.dll
intidate.dll
play.bat
playlist.txt
pptview.exe
ppvwintl.dll
pvreadme.htm
yourpresentation.pps or.ppt
yourmusic/videofile.mp3
saext.dll
unicows.dll

Using your CD burner software, copy these files, but NOT THE FOLDER they
are in to the CD. Then when you insert the CD into the player, it will
automatically run and show your presentation. Does this help clear it up.

Melissa, back up. Forget the "package for CD/package to folder" thing for a
minute.

Open My Documents so you have a "Windows Explorer" window.

Go find your music file. Click on it to select it, then hit Ctrl+C to copy
it (or use Edit|Copy from the menu).

Now go find the folder where your PPT file lives (the one you've been
working on as opposed to the "packaged" folder). Paste the music file in
that folder so both the music file and the PPT/PPS file are in there.

Now open PowerPoint and go to File|Open and navigate to your PPT/PPS file.
Open it.

Find your music file in the presentation. Delete it.

Reinsert the music, making sure to use the one in the folder with your
PPT/PPS file. To do this, use Insert|Movies and Sound|Sound from File.
Navigate to the folder where your PPT/PPS file is and insert the music file.

Save the PPT/PPS file.

This is how we tell people to insert sounds so the links remain intact. This
works even if they don't use (or don't have) the package to CD/package to
folder option to resolve the links.

That's what we meant when we said to put the sound file in the folder with
the presentation before you insert the sound into the presentation. It's
just a good general habit to get into just to be sure things work as you
want.

NOW do the package to folder. Make sure you use a different folder when you
do the package to folder, or your new files will be mixed up with your old
files. The folder, as Michael explained, should include the 8 or so files +
your PPT/PPS file + your linked music file (and any other linked files you
might have). You'll copy ALL those files (not the folder) to the CD.

Remember -- the autorun.INF and the play.BAT files should initiate the
presentation on the CD automatically, so you shouldn't see the files on the
CD.

The only thing I can see, is that not all the files are getting copied to
the CD.

Look at Echo's response and see if that does not clear it up. She has a
tendency to explain things a little more clearly than I do.

The only thing I can see, is that not all the files are getting copied to
the CD.

Look at Echo's response and see if that does not clear it up. She has a
tendency to explain things a little more clearly than I do.

What a nice way to say she goes overboard on the details!

Dear Echo and Michael,
Thanks so much for all the step by step stuff. I can tell by reading it
that I still have a lot to learn! I missed your 5/9 comment/question in
regards to "how I inserted my sound" (sorry!) I can tell I don't REALLY get
the sound in folder/file thing. I did use the insert file option in PPt
and I'm ansy to have to go back in there (I'm getting a zillion versions of
this presentation!!!!) to re arrange stuff but okay.....xxxooo

I've got lots of homework to do but before I dive back in...
1. Can a pps and a ppd be in the same folder? 2. When I start with my
original do I use the pps or the ppd copy? 2. When I go to get my sound file
I assume you mean the wav file? If the answers to these questions will be
answered by "Doing my homework" don't bother answering them.

Remember -- the autorun.INF and the play.BAT files should initiate the
presentation on the CD automatically, so you shouldn't see the files on the
CD.

The sound now works on the "Target" computer!! But what comes up are all
the
files and you have to click on the pps presentation file for the show to
come
up.
{ ...put the sound file into the same folder as
your presentation BEFORE you insert it into your presentation} I guess
this is where I get lost... I go to my PPS show in PPt program, I go to
file, pkg. to cd (which doesn't work for me) so I choose the other option
which is copy to folder. I go to the copy, click on it which opens up 8
or so files, select all and copy to CD. When and where would I be
putting the sd.file into the folder?? Is this a drag and drop thing?

If you use the Package for CD option and select Package to folder Then
all
that is required after you copy all the files to the CD is to insert it,
and
it will (should) automatically start the slide show. To ensure that your
sound will play, it is best to put the sound file into the same folder as
your presentation BEFORE you insert it into your presentation.

| Could you tell us how you inserted your sound
| > files? To Michael. I inserted sound as PPt instructs. This last
attempt I copied my pps to a folder (packaging option doesn't work for
me)
and then burned all files from the folder to a cd. Unfortunately if
that's
the solution I won't know until tomorrow. When I open the cd all the
files
are there. Does the target have to know to click on the pps presentation
file to open the slide shows?
| Thanks.
